With so many career and study options available today, obtaining career guidance from a qualified career counselor is fast becoming a must and not just a nice-to-have.

The good news is that such guidance is not hard to find, says Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus and Business College.

She advises matriculants and students who are still uncertain about which career will best suit them, to see a career counselor.

“Although it is a time for celebration for most, there are young people -  and their caregivers – whose happiness may be marred by the sense of uncertainty and fear for the future.

They dread being asked what they are going to do, she says, “because in all honesty, they have no clue”.

The economic pressure that families are still experiencing due to last year’s worldwide recession adds to the anxiety, Rabson points out.

“Everyone wants to become employable and employed in the shortest time possible so they can become financially independent or at least contribute to the family income.

“In these times of economic challenges, we need to be more astute and focused especially concerning further studies.

“We offer prospective students free consultation with experienced counselors in order to ensure they enroll for course or modules that will increase their chances of securing employment.”

Boston’s career counseling has a computerized as well as a personal component.

“The user-friendly computer programme provides basic information about a wide range of careers – what they encompass as well as the requirements in terms of qualifications, skills and personal traits.

“It also gives links to the various fields associated with a particular career.

“You may start investigating a career in computers and discover that you prefer a customer care environment where computers are used, such as that of a call centre,” says Rabson.

“You can compare and weigh your choices to reach a decision.”

Rabson emphasizes that pupils who make use of the career counseling services are not obliged to enroll for a course at Boston City Campus.

“We saw the need for such a counseling service and have offered it nationally, free of charge, for the past seven years,’ she says.

Career counselors, she adds, not only offer advice on career and courses, but also on where to apply for financial assistance.
