PUBLIC RELATIONS - The real world

Here strategic plans are developed through organizing Boston Media House events. There are networking opportunities at expos – such as the Sanlam Fashion Week. Sponsorships are arranged for various colleges needs.

Critical thinking skills are developed by examining relevant case studies, and an insight into the various aspects of the PR industry is gained. Crisis communication simulation ensures PR students experience the pressure and deadlines of the Public Relations environment.
Boston Media House organizes Corporate Social Investment projects, for instance Abangani Children’s Home in Alexandra.

Brand management and building relationships with various stakeholders are taught through the planning and organizing of Boston Media House open days. Portfolio of work includes house journals, websites planning, and corporate identity policies for a company, sponsorship letters, media kit and press releases. To cap it all, communication skills are developed through speeches and lecturing opportunities
.


AUDIO VISUAL MULTIMEDIA - Going beyond convention

From concept to final product (the ABC of video) the thought process is developed. This includes analysis (genre, production type and production format) pre-production (planning, conceptualizing, scouting, scripting and storyboarding); production (lighting, actual shooting, and sound recording); and post-production (editing and packaging).

The course also includes applied theory (history and development); on- location facilities; development of national and international skills; practical workshops (lighting, audio, make-up, etc); practical assignments; industry - related projects entrance into VUKA awards.
Starting from first year students are equipped with necessary knowledge and skills for the professional production environment with additional practical experience gained during 100 hour internships within the industry. Show reels (portfolio, proof of work) are created for career applications.

Industry standard equipment: Current equipment consists of Apple Editing Suites, using Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools and broadcast – quality equipments (Sony PD170) and HD Cameras and Editing Suite. All equipment and software is updated regularly to ensure students are abreast of industry technologies.


RADIO - Be heard
If presenting or production radio is your dream, then the Boston Media House: radio specialisation is for you. In the first year of study you will be introduced to the basic concepts of radio and by the end of your first year  you will be scripting, producing and presenting your very own radio shows .From year two onwards you will work in our ultra modern radio studios.

Boston Media House gives learners the opportunity to experience real hands-on practical training in their chosen specialisation. Students also get to run their own campus radio station in their third year with the opportunity to broadcast as the resident DJ. The Boston Media House in – house stations are designed with leading edge technology. The simulated -on –air studios and production studios with analogue and digital based applications are powered by Dalet™ software and Product Tools™. This state –of- the -art technology, combined with a theoretical understanding of radio broadcasting and production, offers students the opportunity to achieve their dream career in this dynamic industry.

ADVERTISING – An interactive, practical course in brand and communication strategy

Have you ever wanted to create an advert? Have you ever wondered about the influence advertising has on your decisions when you make a purchase? How children as young as five, don’t ask for a doll, they want Barbie doll or a BMW bike? …or how advertising slogans become part of everyday conversation…Yebo Gogo™

Be part of hands -on approach understanding how and why advertising works, researching and analysing brands, developing creative briefs and working with the graphic department to bring the conceptual idea to life.

Learn about branding challenges and opportunities, planning, implementing and evaluating marketing programme. Explore conceptual creative thinking with subjects such as creativity and copywriting. Put together proposals and advertising briefs; develop integrated marketing communication programme competitor brand analysis, and segmentation and differentiation strategies. Draw up media plans and throughout the year, build up a practical working portfolio.


MARKETING
What does the term marketing mean to you? Many students think it means the same as selling. Others think of marketing only as advertising. And no wonder – every day we are bombarded with radio commercials, sales calls and promotion offers. However selling and advertising are only the tip of the marketing iceberg.

Students will learn that marketing is about satisfying customer’s needs. Marketers need to develop products that provide a competitive advantage, set prices that provide value for money, and distribute and promote these products effectively. Thus, students will gain a thorough understanding of the marketing mix – a set of marketing tools that work together to satisfy customer needs and build customer relationship. Consumer behaviour is one of the topics that will be focused on in Marketing. I am a consumer and you are a consumer.

Most of us spend more time buying and consuming than we do working or sleeping. Marketers spend millions attempting to influence what, when and how you consume. Students will be introduced to an exciting and ever – changing world of international marketing. New markets are springing forth in emerging economies form Eastern Europe, China, Indonesia, and Korea – in short globally. Students will learn how the marketing mix needs to be adapted in order in order for their business to become a global player.

The media industry is part of service industry and students will come to understand that service marketing is different from product marketing and that it requires different strategies and tactics. Marketers need to collect data to solve problems and students will gain thorough knowledge on the planning and executing of a marketing research project.

JOURNALISM & PHOTOJOURNALISM – Telling the real story
Exposure to realistic time constraints and how to work under the kind of pressure the industry prescribes is taught with Press Conference simulation. Aspiring journalists and photojournalists are encouraged to produce articles for BMH Newsletter, and other youth publications and community newspapers. To broaden the mind, investigative journalism and research are developed through analyzing current ethical issues – “War against Terrorism”, “Role of Women in Media”, etc.

Internet journalism and sub-editing are offered to ensure that our journalists are up- to – date with the newest trends in journalism, for instance the increasing number of on – line leadership publications and cellular publications, such as “Saltwater Girl”.

Writing reviews in various entertainment beats – movies, music, etc – is part of the course. Through realistic simulations of interviews, students develop interviewing skills and the skill of writing profiles about people who have a story to tell. Photojournalism projects based on the principles of journalism are undertaken – taking photos that tell stories; acquiring the skills required to continue in a career of photojournalism, or to become a freelance photographer. Techniques in the preparation of portfolios for career interviews are taught. The very best in industry standard equipment is available; each student will work with Canon Digital SLR cameras, Photoshop Elements for photo manipulation, and complete professional studio lighting.

AUDIO VISUAL MULTIMEDIA/ANIMATION – Mind over matter
Have you ever wanted to create your own heroic fantasy character or design a futuristic Japanesemech? The Animation curriculum offers this exciting opportunity to avoid animation enthusiasts and creative thinkers.

This three year diploma majoring in 3D Animation and Art Design specializes in training the individual in a scarce and highly sought after skill. These specialization focuses on training students in the fundamental techniques required to become 2D/3D artists independent of software applications.

BMH Animation students are placed in all major animation and production houses throughout the country. Career opportunities range from professional freelance concept artist to video game modeler.     

CREATIVE ADVERTISING/GRAPHICS – Emphasis on design that works
Small groups of students per class ensure individual attention. Highly qualified lectures with industry knowledge and experience
conduct the course.

Spacious workrooms/studios are equipped with cutting edge hardware and software technology. All students have time to spend on their computers.

In the first year you will study creativity in illustration, storyboarding, conceptual thinking and innovation. Your introduction to media will include communication, advertising, and power learning computer skills. Both the graphic design and DTP (desk top publishing) courses include graphic design theory, reproduction and print, and computer graphics. Web design in year one covers introduction to the Internet, HTML and web software.

Year two includes graphic design, DTP, advertising, illustration and the Internet.

Your final year focuses on graphic design with the emphasis on advertising, branding and marketing along with entrepreneurship and web design. This, together with an internship and the creation of a portfolio, gives our graduates the competitive edge in their career.
